Career progression from TA1 to School Secretary
Langney Primary School, Eastbourne
Mandy Barlow shares her experiences of
training and development and her pathway to becoming the school
secretary.
I started with the role of supporting a pupil with Autism in
year 1 for 6 months; the pupil was then allocated a place at Hazel
Court School. From then on I attended many courses; Literacy and
Numeracy, ICT, Behaviour Management, ALS, Bullseye and in house
training with the Deputy Head. This helped me progress to a TA 2. A
position became available in KS2 in year 3, which I was offered. I
supported in KS2 for 3 years across all year groups. I was given a
lot of encouragement, taught and supported by class teachers. Also
during this period 2 afternoons per week I worked in administration
alongside the school Secretary.
The Head teacher then encouraged me to become a TA3 as he felt I
was ready for a challenge. I covered a Year 5 class with a few
lively characters, whilst the teacher took time out to do planning;
a TA worked alongside me to support with the class.
The school secretary went on maternity leave so I applied to
cover her position during this period and was successful in taking
on this temporary role . She then decided not to return to work, so
I was offered the role permanently. I am the first port of call for
the school and have a very good rapport with parents, children and
staff. Since taking on this role I have attended many courses on
Sims. NET. I also deal with School Funds, PTA, School trips, and
School Dinners, Newsletters and letters home to Parents.
My training and development within the school enabled me to
progress as a TA so that I was able to cover classes as a TA3.
My work in administration developed my skills so that I was able
to take up the post of School Secretary, a post which benefits from
the skills, knowledge and relationships I developed as a TA.
The experience I have gained through working with pupils and
staff during my TA roles has helped me within my secretarial role
as both the children and parents know me and we share a very good
relationship. My role is very enjoyable and I work alongside a
great team.
