Performance Management for all Support Staff
Many schools have a whole school approach to performance
management which includes their support
staff.
A robust system for induction, performance management and
continuous professional development supports staff in working
effectively and recognises their role within the
school.
Areas for professional development are agreed during the
performance management process, and should be linked to the
school's development plan. For example:
- teaching assistants may wish to focus on a specific aspect of
their work, for example special educational needs, dyslexia,
behaviour etc.
- office managers or bursars may want to gain a qualification in
school business management (CSBM and DSBM);
- premises staff now have the opportunity to gain the
Support Work in Schools Vocational Qualification, in order to
confirm their skill level and develop their capability.
- staff may also wish to gain Level 2 Maths and English.
Review Meeting
At the review meeting, support staff discuss their job role,
future challenges and past successes. They and
their line manager/reviewer have the opportunity to
consider relevant qualifications for their professional
development.
This website is an excellent support for this process.
Links to the School Development Plan
Decisions about appropriate training for support staff should be
linked to the school development plan. Each school will have
its own performance management policy.
